Bergen aan Zee hasn't been around for very long. In 1906, Bergen aan Zee was established as part of an initiative set up by the mayor of Bergen and his wife: Jacob and Maria van Reenen. Before 1906 there were already a few residences dotted around the dunes, but nothing of any notable scale. In the early 1900s, artists discovered the village. The location appealed to this community as the stunning nature served as inspiration to them and their work.

Even though we don't have mountains hundreds of feet high, Bergen aan Zee offers great other places to explore on two wheels. Whether you go mountain biking through the woods, over hills and moors or just explore the dunes, challenging mountain bike routes with narrow forest paths, tough steep climbs, fast descents and unpaved country roads are available everywhere. The MTB route through Schoorl is one of the most beautiful routes. You can still feel the Schoorl ridge in your legs after two days!

The stunning city of Alkmaar is only 11 kilometres from Bergen aan Zee. A 20-minute drive takes you to the city centre. Alkmaar is also easy to reach by bike, which takes around 40 minutes. This city is filled with beautiful old buildings and historic little canals. A trip to Alkmaar is the perfect day out if you want to eat, shop or enjoy the rich history the town has to offer. Alkmaar is still one of the five cities in the Netherlands that hosts a cheese market, every Friday, from April to September. So, if you fancy a nice day out, Alkmaar is the perfect place to go.

The Sea Aquarium is within walking distance of Beach Hotel Bergen aan Zee. The Sea Aquarium has more than 300 different fish species you can admire: enjoy the excitement of the Amazon jungle along the piranhas and creepy reptiles, through the Atlantic Ocean, tropical waters and the Mediterranean Sea to the North Sea and discover the most splendid fish species and exciting marine animals!
